Integrating 21st Century Skills in the Maldives Curriculum: Grade 4 Mathematics
This report is a product of a KIX EMAP Rapid Customised Country Support (RCCS) activity. The KIX EMAP RCCS is a demand-driven activity, co-designed with Ministries of Education, that follows up on regional capacity strengthening and peer-learning exchange activities to ensure that countries have the opportunity to uptake the learnings at the national level. It is initiated by a request from the Ministry of Education, through the KIX EMAP national team, to address a specific knowledge need in the education system that can be fulfilled by a rapid and focused activity supported by the KIX EMAP Hub.
The KIX EMAP RCCS: Integration of 21st century skills in curriculum in the Maldives responded to a demand from the National Institute of Education (NIE) to strengthen their staff’s capacity to review curricula for integrating 21st Century Skills (21CS) into all levels of education and to implement the new curriculum framework into practice. The RCCS activity ran from May 2023 to July 2025, led by the NIE, in collaboration with the KIX EMAP Hub and with technical support from the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Capacity strengthening activities were delivered to the NIE for the implementation of a comprehensive review of the K-12 curricula in view of integrating 21CS into the competency-based curriculum and related teaching and assessment strategies into classrooms. The learnings were then applied by key NIE representatives in the form of two reports. reports. This report showcases how 21CS are embedded into the curriculum of a selected exemplary grade and subject – Grade 4 Mathematics. A second report showcases, in an exemplary manner, how one of the competencies - Key Competency 06: Making Meaning - is integrated into the new national curriculum.
